In the pursuit of sustainable agriculture, solutions that both maintain soil health and address local environmental challenges have positive impacts on wide-scale, community-based, and individual agriculture. In Northwest Arkansas, a team of dedicated scientists and sustainability experts recognized a need in Arkansas, an agriculturally based state, for a crop fertilizer and soil amendment that mitigates negative environmental affects in the local community. Through this, Carbon Chicken was born.
Carbon Chicken is a meticulously engineered, crafted with care soil carbon amendment that works to improve soil health and boost nutrient richness for plant uptake. Made up of 80% composted chicken litter and 20% biochar that has been inoculated with powerful soil microbes and humates that help release locked up nutrients to your plants.

Moreover, our product is designed for efficacy, and suitable for every project from backyard gardens to large-scale agricultural operations.
The effectiveness of Carbon Chicken comes from the distinct roles of its key components- composted chicken litter, biochar and microbes. The composted chicken litter provides a rich, balanced supply of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium: essential nutrients for plant growth as well as active microbiology. Through composting, nutrient availability is optimized, and harmful pathogens are eliminated, creating a safe and effective fertilizer. Meanwhile, biochar, produced through pyrolysis- a process that heats organic material without oxygen- is enriched with beneficial microbes and humates that enhance soil structure, improve water retention, and stimulate microbial activity. The result of these elements working together is healthier, more resilient soil that supports stronger plant growth.

The combination of these factors provides patrons with both fast-acting and long-term benefits. As a result of the amendment’s components, nutrients become more readily available, soil aeration and structure are improved, and soil water retention increases, reducing irrigation demands and improving drought resistance. As an added feature, the biochar also fosters a thriving microbial ecosystem, which plays an impactful and positive role in nutrient cycling and overall soil health. Its ability to sequester carbon also contributes to reducing greenhouse gas concentrations.

Developed in Arkansas, Carbon Chicken is the result of over a decade of research and experimentation led by co-founder and fifth generation farmer Jody Hardin and supported by a team dedicated to advancing regenerative carbon-negative farming practices. Located in a region where the poultry industry is central to the state, this project turns what currently exists as a growing environmental concern with poultry litter into an opportunity to benefit the local communities of Northwest Arkansas and beyond.

By utilizing Carbon Chicken in your gardens or farming practices, patrons can contribute to a more sustainable future in agriculture. With its potential and design to enhance soil health and plant growth, sequester carbon, and improve sustainability in agriculture, Carbon Chicken is an easily applicable and effective step toward more resilient and energy-efficient farming systems. Our team is excited to share Carbon Chicken with you this growing season.
